This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at several agonizing personal histories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.

All in all, the opening looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.

This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song composed by artist the talented musician. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one put out by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will love its inclusion.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.

The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.

Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the series will have some changes and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as among these.

The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and the video site.
