Triple National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player Jokic endured a "heartbreaking" injury to his knee as the Denver Nuggets lost by a score of 147-123 to the Miami Heat.

The star player sustained the injury in the latter stages of the opening half following an unintentional contact with team-mate Jones.

The other player stepped on the footwear of the big man, and he promptly went down to the floor holding his leg.

The 30-year-old, that is leading the NBA this season in boards and assists, posted 21 points and eight dimes in the game before suffering the problem.

Jokic will have an MRI scan on the following day to assess the severity of the issue.

"Immediately, Jokic knew something was wrong," said Denver coach David Adelman.

"Injuries are part of the game. Any player that suffers an injury, it's difficult, particularly a player as talented as him. We will know more on Tuesday."

"The team will adjust as a team. Obviously, at this moment, I am more concerned just about Jokic personally and the letdown of experiencing something of that nature."
