UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several fascinating future games, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"This is a unique game where a young woman containing several personalities within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct souls, all possessing unique anxieties and drives. These entities can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, though additional clips show the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.

A World of Personal Horror

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are specific to every individual."

The core gameplay loop involves managing whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's fears become exaggerated and assault the girl one after another. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Decision

At first glance, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present element, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

After a player believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, since each soul can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining could be a fake. Either way, your decisions are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
